Finding the perfect combination of supplements, nutrition, physical therapy, and a pain management plan for an older dog can be quite difficult. It's not the magical transformation from a disabled dog to one running effortlessly, as often shown on Facebook or TikTok. What works for Lakota might not be suitable for your senior dog. Always research, consult your vet, and pay attention to your dog. I am a pet owner without a medical background, and I just want the best for my dogs. I'll never stop trying.

Hope

We played ball last night for 30 minutes! Lakota hadn't touched her ball in over a year, but last night, she played catch with me. and slept through the night without carprofen or Pawfy pain chews! Since she was 3 months old, Lakota's mission was to master the art of "ball."

Dog with ball

She never let the ball out of her sight, sleeping with it, chewing on it until she fell asleep, and carrying it in her mouth as if it were permanently attached. However, as the years went by and her arthritis advanced, she lost interest. Pain and discomfort became her new companions. She would come to me for help, unable to understand why she felt uncomfortable and relying on me to fix it.

Fresh is best

Fresh food without preservatives, chemicals, or seasoning. Boiled and steamed vegetables, protein, turmeric. Researching various fruits and veggies before incorporating them into her diet has been crucial. Fresh ginger (no more than 1 teaspoon/day) is a key ingredient (gingerol) that naturally aids in reducing inflammation and pain. I use it myself, and it works! However, she has developed a dislike for it. If she detects its smell in her food, she won't eat it. Greenies pill pockets are very effective, provided there is pure meat to cover the finely chopped ginger beneath. Ginger leaves a "hot, spicy" aftertaste, prompting her to drink a lot.

Treats

Frozen wild blueberries, chopped fresh carrots are healthy snacks. After looking into store bought "human grade" snacks, I wasn't pleased with the sugar added. Pups don't need salt, carbs or sugar.

Supplements

I'm starting to identify what works and what doesn't. More updates soon.....
