At the initial signs of loose or watery stool, promptly take action. The sooner you address the issue, the better it is for your pup. Ignoring it can lead to severe dehydration, resulting in a rushed trip to the vet and potentially costly treatments that could have been avoided. Acting quickly when your dog has diarrhea is crucial because a canine's health can deteriorate rapidly. Small preventative steps at home can save your dog from severe pain and save you from an expensive emergency veterinary bill. 

Why Early Action Matters

• Rapid Dehydration: Dogs lose fluids and vital electrolytes quickly through watery stool.

• Size Vulnerability: Small dogs and puppies can reach critical dehydration levels within hours.

• Organ Stress: Severe fluid loss strains the kidneys and cardiovascular system.

• Escalating Costs: A bottle of simple remedy costs very little, while overnight vet hospitalization costs thousands. 

Immediate Action Plan

• Withhold Food: Fast adult dogs for 12 to 24 hours to let the gut rest.

• Keep Water Available: Never withhold water; vital fluids must be replaced continuously.

• Bland Diet: Transition to boiled chicken breast (think lean) and white rice once fasting ends.

• Probiotics: Introduce dog-specific probiotics to restore healthy gut bacteria. 

When to Bypass Home Care and See a Vet

• Age: Puppies and senior dogs should see a vet immediately.

• Stool Quality: Seek care if you see blood, black tarry stool, or worms.

• Companion Symptoms: Lethargy, vomiting, or fever mean it is an emergency.

• Duration: Go to the vet if the diarrhea lasts more than 48 hours despite a bland diet. 

Caring for an older pup in your pack requires additional attention, as their age means prescription medications can disrupt gut bacteria, irritate the stomach lining, or decrease organ efficiency. Alterations in their diet can also cause issues.

Luckily, both Lakota and Sultan are competitive and see ice cubes as treats, so providing them with several bowls of crushed ice was incredibly helpful. The recent bout of watery diarrhea, which had been quite concerning, improved within 24 hours after offering 4 bowls of crushed ice and serving boiled ground turkey and white rice for dinner and the next day's breakfast.

Monitoring your dogs and observing their body language, habits, and general mood can provide you with clues to prevent unnecessary injuries or illnesses. Are they garbage bandits?Could they have eaten something while on snifari outside? Perhaps someone dropped their snack on the floor ready for a nose hose.
