Before you grab the pan, hit the books and make a plan!
My sister-in-law asked for the "recipe" I use to feed my two dogs, but I couldn't provide it. Why?
It's crucial to determine your dog's specific needs at different life stages because their nutritional requirements change as they grow, mature, and age. Not adjusting a home-cooked diet to suit their current life stage can lead to severe, irreversible health problems. I don't want to be responsible for that. Lakota and Sultan have similar but not identical diets.

Lakota, once an active, high-energy dog, is now 15 years old and has developed arthritis and joint issues. Sultan, on the other hand, was previously neglected and starved by his former family in Alabama. Although his health has significantly improved over the seven-plus years with me, at 12 years old, arthritis and joint issues have not yet appeared. In summary, Lakota's diet is therapeutic, while Sultan's is preventive.
Feeding an adult dog a calorie-rich puppy formula can quickly result in obesity, putting stress on joints and organs. On the other hand, a standard diet may not supply sufficient energy for a highly active working dog, leading to muscle loss. Senior dogs often need proteins that are easier to digest and fewer calories to avoid weight gain. I discovered that pureeing the vegetables for Lakota and Sultan helps with digestion, allowing for better nutrient absorption. Senior dogs are also susceptible to age-related conditions like chronic kidney disease or arthritis. For instance, a home-cooked diet high in phosphorus can accelerate kidney failure in older dogs.

Many generic online recipes lack essential micronutrients such as zinc, iodine, and vitamin D. While an adult dog might manage a slight imbalance for a few months, puppies or senior dogs can experience health issues much sooner.
To safely customize a diet, consider:

What life stage or age is your dog currently in?
What breed and weight are they?
Do they have any existing health issues?
What is their activity level?
Do your homework, read a book before you cook.
